The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is notifying those with food allergies of their risk of an allergic reaction to certain jams and jellies that contain milk and soy, since they are not listed in the ingredients.

The undeclared ingredients were detected by the FDA in Hanover Pike Enterprises, Inc.’s 8 ounce and 4 ounce jars of Hot Pepper Jelly and Green Pepper Jelly and its 9 ounce and 4 ounce jars of Blackberry Brandy Jam and Peach Brandy Jam.

The products containing the undeclared ingredients are labeled “Jill’s Jams Mixes and More” and “Jill’s Jams Jellies” and were distributed across the U.S. through retail stores and the company’s website.

Those with allergies to milk or soy are at risk of developing an allergic reaction if the products are consumed. To date, no illnesses have been reported due to these items.

“Undeclared allergens are consistently one of the top reasons for food products to be recalled, resulting in illnesses in consumers and financial losses for companies" states Dr. Jason Dobranic Ph. D., EMSL’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. “Throughout the U.S. and Canada, EMSL Analytical’s numerous food testing laboratories provide consumers and companies with a wide array of allergen tests, including soy protein, peanuts, sesame, almond, total milk, egg, crustacean, and gluten.”
