According to Bloomberg News, China’s largest car exporter, Chery Automobile Co., is expanding their car recall in Australia to five more countries after detecting asbestos in some models. The company will be recalling a total of 18,875 cars in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Singapore and Uruguay–in addition to 23,000 cars already recalled in Australia.

The recall was announced after customs authorities discovered asbestos, a potential cancer causing mineral, in the car’s engines and exhaust gaskets.
The expansion of this recall has raised concerns regarding the quality of Chinese automakers’ products. However, in the next year, vehicle exports from China are predicted to rise by 50 percent as they increase their exports into foreign markets.

Inhalation of asbestos can be extremely hazardous, especially if individuals are exposed for long durations. Asbestos fibers travel into the body attacking soft tissue and can cause disease.

“Exposure to asbestos is responsible for over 100,000 deaths per year, according to the World Health Organization,” says Ed Cahill, Vice President of EMSL Analytical, Inc.’s Asbestos Division. “EMSL Analytical has been performing asbestos analysis since 1981, and all of our locations in the United States and Canada are fully equipped and accredited to test for the presence of asbestos in air, soil, water, and building materials.”
