Salmonella Contamination Prompts Pet Food Recall
EMSL Analytical offers testing for Salmonella and a wide variety of other foodborne pathogens.
According to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a single batch of AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula has been recalled by Breeder’s Choice Pet Food due to possible Salmonella contamination.
The affected products have “Best Before” dates of August 28th, 29th, and 30th of 2013 and have been supplied to retailers and distributors in California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Virginia, and Washington.
The contaminated pet food puts both dogs and humans at risk of developing Salmonella poisoning. While consumption of the product is an obvious risk for dogs, handling the pet food may be a less apparent risk for humans. To avoid contamination due to contact, hands should be thoroughly washed after handling the product or touching surfaces exposed to it.
To date, no illnesses have been linked to the pet food.
Individuals infected with Salmonella typically develop fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after consumption, and the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Healthy individuals usually recover without treatment, but children, the elderly, and those with a weak immune system can develop a severe illness where hospitalization is required.
Pets infected with Salmonella may experience fatigue and develop diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Infected pets can be carriers that spread the pathogen to other pets or humans.
“In severe cases, Salmonella may spread from the intestines to other parts of the body and may be fatal if not treated properly with antibiotics,” states Dr. Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., EMSL’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. “EMSL Analytical’s advanced microbiology laboratories test food and environmental samples to detect Salmonella and other foodborne pathogens.”
