Personal Injury Claims Continue to Rise in 2011 Despite Fall in Road Accidents

There was a sharp rise in personal injury claims relating to road accidents in the UK in 2011, despite the number of road accidents actually decreasing in the same period.

A recent report from the Actuarial Profession has revealed that personal injury claims rose by around 18 per cent last year, even though there was around 11 per cent less road accidents reported in the same 12 months.

It is thought that the main reason for the fall in road accidents in 2011 is that higher fuel prices have resulted in fewer motor journeys being made. However, according to the actuaries, who compile and analyse a wide range of statistics, and then use this data to calculate insurance premiums, a higher proportion of these people have pursued compensation claims for personal injuries such as whiplash.

The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, which released the report, said of the findings: “Since our records began year on year, a greater proportion of accidents has involved a bodily injury claim, but this year has seen the greatest increase ever.”

The report also identified a number of hotspots in the North West and Midlands, including major cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham, for road accidents that resulted in personal injury claims being filed.

Although the number of road accidents occurring on Britain’s roads is decreasing, it is clear that motorists and passengers alike are still suffering as a result of road accidents, and are still as susceptible to personal injury as they have ever been.
