Last month, The St. Louis American published a report about the surprise and shock of many residents who have learned that their homes may have issues with vapor intrusion.  The article discusses a public housing development known as Elmwood Park that is located above an area that may have contaminated groundwater.

The story begins 22 years ago when a metal company spilled trichloroethylene (TCE) onto the ground.  The grease cleaning solvent made its way into the groundwater spreading out in a plume. The TCE can enter buildings over the toxic plume through a process known as vapor intrusion.  When this occurs, people in the impacted homes and other structures can be exposed to the toxic fumes.

One company that has been on the forefront of helping to test for vapor intrusion in homes, schools and businesses is EMSL Analytical, Inc. The company has one of the most modern testing laboratories that specializes in determining the extent and cause of vapor intrusion cases.

“Trichloroethylene contamination and vapor intrusion go hand in hand with so many cases like this across the country,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical.  “Acute and chronic inhalation exposure to trichloroethylene can affect the human central nervous system, with symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, confusion, euphoria, facial numbness, and weakness.  Liver, kidney, immunological, endocrine, and developmental effects have also been reported in humans.  Air testing is the only way to know for sure if vapor intrusion is a problem and EMSL offers quick, accurate and affordable testing solutions.”

EMSL Analytical has sponsored an online educational video about the dangers associated with vapor intrusion.  It can be seen at:
