Last month, it was reported that the Treasure Island Naval Station may have more widespread radioactive contamination than previously thought.  The Bay Citizen published an article about the area after obtaining documents about the cleanup efforts.

The Navy began preparing the land in 1993 to allow San Francisco to begin using it for other purposes.  The area is slated to become a high-rise community for approximately 20,000 residents. It was built from landfill in the 1930s and was used by the Navy as a repair and salvage area for their ships that were exposed to atomic blasts.

According to the article, “Contractors hired by the Navy to rid the island of its toxic past relied on an inaccurate 2006 assessment, according to a series of memos, notices of violations and emails from the California Department of Public Health.”

Radiation is known to increase cancer risks.  Both the type of radiation to which a person is exposed and the pathway by which they are exposed influence health effects. Different types of radiation vary in their ability to damage different kinds of human tissue.

EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading radiological testing laboratory, offers analytical services to regulating bodies, industry and the general public to determine the radiological content of materials.  “It’s important that before a large scale residential construction project begins on land known to have radioactive materials that it be fully remediated and tested to ensure that it is safe for people,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “EMSL offers radiological testing for a number of elements that include gross alpha, cesium and other radiological areas of concern.  With proper remediation and a through testing program, these former military and industrial sites can be put back to good use,” he continued.
