Formaldehyde is a chemical that is widely used by industry to manufacture building materials, household products and even a number of consumer products.  Manufacturers primarily use it in the production of resins and as a chemical intermediate.

Formaldehyde is classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC).  It can be found in numerous wood products and in some types of foam insulation, synthetic fabrics and some beauty products.

It is also a by-product of combustion and certain other natural processes.  Because formaldehyde can be found in so many indoor environments, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has dedicated a section of their website to educating people about formaldehyde in the home.  According to the website, “The health effects of formaldehyde exposure vary from one person to another. The most common symptoms are eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing, headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Human eyes are especially sensitive to formaldehyde. Many people describe the eye irritation as a burning sensation much like when cutting an onion or when you get soap in your eyes.”

In addition to the health effects listed above, formaldehyde is believed to cause cancer by many scientists.  The Department of Health and Human Services named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has also classified formaldehyde as a human carcinogen.

One of the leading environmental and indoor air quality (IAQ) laboratories in North America, EMSL Analytical, Inc., offers formaldehyde testing to government agencies, manufacturers, product distributors and the public.     “Formaldehyde is a modern chemical that people may be exposed to on a daily basis,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical.  “At EMSL, we provide the latest testing methods to determine if people in their homes or workers who are around manufacturing processes that utilize formaldehyde, are being exposed to unsafe levels of this chemical.”

EMSL has sponsored a video about the hazards associated with formaldehyde in the indoor environment.  It can be seen at:
