Incredible Pizza Company Honors Injured Officer Cortez on Patriots Day Sept 11
Indianapolis, IN, September 4, 2012- Indy’s Incredible Pizza Company wants everyone that prides themselves in being appreciative of the sacrifices made by local heroes, invites them to celebrate Patriots Day to honor Officer Santos Cortez who was injured in the line of duty. Officer Cortez was hit by a drunk driver in the line of duty, and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Incredible Pizza will donate, as a fundraiser for Officer Cortez and his family, 20% of all sales that day. Officer Cortez is a member of the Indianapolis Metro Police, and has a family to support. According to a Fox 59 news report from June 20, 2012, “IMPD officer injured in a serious car accident last week continues to improve. Officer Santos Cortez has been moved to a rehab hospital to continue his recovery. He was responding to a hit-and-run accident when Jerrel Watkins hit him. Police said Watkins disregarded a stop sign in the 5200 block of West Washington Street, striking Officer Cortez’s IMPD police car. Cortez suffered a fractured back as a result.
Investigators said Watkins had a blood alcohol content level that was three times the legal limit at the time of the accident.” According to another report from Wish TV 8, “Officer Santos Cortez was injured when police say he was pursuing someone wanted in multiple hit-and-run crashes. That suspect, Jerrel Watkins, is suspected of crashing into Cortez’s vehicle. Watkins told police he had three or four beers and didn’t remember the crash, according to court documents.”
