Formaldehyde to be Removed from All Johnson and Johnson Products

According to The New York Times, Johnson and Johnson has voluntarily decided to remove potentially harmful chemicals, including formaldehyde and 1,4 dioxane, from all of their personal care products by the end of 2015. Upon this announcement, Johnson and Johnson has become the first major personal care product company to make this extensive commitment.

Previously, the company stated that they planned to remove certain chemicals from their baby products by 2013, but their latest announcement will extend these plans to their adult products as well. Johnson and Johnson, along with many of their competitors, have been urged to remove disputed ingredients from their products for years by various environmental and consumer groups.

Dozens of children’s products were analyzed in 2009 by the Environmental Working Group and two potentially harmful substances, formaldehyde and 1,4 dioxane, were detected. Formaldehyde was identified last year as a human carcinogen by government scientists, and 1,4 dioxane has been linked with cancer in animal studies.

Johnson and Johnson’s personal care products currently meet safety standards and comply with regulations. The company has voluntarily decided to modify some questionable ingredients to prevent any health and safety concerns from consumers.
