Salmonella Ground Beef Outbreak Sickens 40 across 8 States

According to Safety News Today, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that 40 people have fallen ill across eight states due to an outbreak of Salmonella serotype Enteritidis in ground beef.

The CDC reports that the states with reported illnesses include Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. To date, eleven of the victims have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

On July 22, Cargill Meat Solutions announced their recall of 29,339 pounds of fresh ground beef linked to the outbreak. Health officials believe that most of the infected meat has been consumed by now, but encourage consumers to check their freezers to ensure  they don’t still have any of the contaminated meat.

Individuals affected by a Salmonella outbreak typically develop fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after the infection, and the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Healthy individuals can usually recover without treatment, but young children, the elderly, and those with a weak immune system may develop a more severe illness requiring hospitalization.
