In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns over exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes isopyrazam, which was added to the Prop 65 list in July of 2012.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Isopyrazam is a fungicide developed to control black sigatoka, a leaf spot disease in banana production.  Isopyrazam is a pyrazole carboxamide.  The mode of action of this group of fungicides is understood to be inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase, which is a functional part of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the mitochondrial electron transport chain.”

LA Testing, a network of environmental laboratories in California offers analytical services to identify isopyrazam and other chemicals listed on the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer. “There are no registered uses associated with this chemical in the U.S.,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “However, it is used during the production of bananas that are imported into the United States.  Bananas are a favorite food of both babies and their mothers. Dietary exposure to isopyrazam from consuming bananas is possible.  LA Testing offers food testing for residues of this potentially harmful chemical.”
