Collaborative Effort Results in New Product From Specialty Motions Inc.

Approached by a local manufacture of Arial photography systems, SMI Inc. went to work designing a linear actuator to support a camera system for an Aircraft

Corona, California, United States, July 26, 2012 - ProCraft Aviation recently approached SMI to design a linear stage to support a camera system. Together the two  companies worked in the development of a linear actuator to support the 200 pound camera system which enables it to extend down below the aircraft during flight.  The customization of the actuator included special screws, special limit switches and wiring harnesses to withstand the rigors of flight and allow the camera to photograph and record without vibration or blur.  The camera feeds information and data back to the cockpit where the camera crew can remotely control, tilt, pan and zoom. The partnership of SMI Inc. and ProCraft Aviation brought about an opportunity for the exciting development of linear actuators never used before which necessitated demanding loading and rigidity requirements. This camera will be mounted on the fuselage of the Wolfe Air Cessna 337 Skymaster aircraft and used to capture in flight photos. Requirements of the linear actuator used were that it had to handle a large heavy camera with fast flight time and great shock loads by the aircraft during the landing sequence. They were able to successfully build a system which performed flawlessly.Specialty Motions Inc. is a leading manufacturer of Linear Actuators, Supported Systems, Belt Driven Actuators, Push & Pull Actuators, Miniature Linear Actuator, Table Top systems, Curviline slides and Rails, Ball Bushings, and Hi-Performance Actuators. Because of the intricacies of this technology these services couldn’t be done by the typical machine shop. The capabilities of SMI Inc. have grown to include Engineering Design, System Integration and Assembly of products to custom specifications. SMI Inc. also carries their own line of linear stages, ball slides and crossed roller tables based upon market feedback and customer input. The SMI Inc. tooling department contains a variety of carbide type cutters and tooling designed to penetrate, drill, and tap this material.
