Salmonella Outbreak in 7 States Forces Recall of Cargill Fresh Beef

Late Sunday Cargill Beef recalled nearly 30,000 pounds of 85 percent lean, fresh, ground beef due to Salmonella. The affected meat was produced in Wyalusing, PA on May 25, 2012. 

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the infected meat during an ongoing investigation of a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak. The case involved 33 individuals across the states of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire New York, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Vermont. Investigators suspect that Cargill’s customers repackaged the beef for sale to the public.

Individuals infected with Salmonella often experience diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after the infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. However, infants, the elderly, or those with weak immune systems may be likely to develop a more serious illness.

This outbreak of Salmonella was found to be drug sensitive, and therefore infected patients can be treated with antibiotics.
