A recent study reveals that vitamin E, a common vitamin found in vegetable oil, nuts, mango, broccoli and spinach, may protect against liver cancer. Researchers discovered that individuals who consumed higher amounts of vitamin E, whether through food or dietary supplements, were at a lower risk of liver cancer.

According to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, a Chinese study consisting of 132,837 male and female participants recorded and analyzed their diets and vitamin E intake through a questionnaire. Ten years following the study, researchers found that 267 individuals had developed liver cancer. Their results were consistent, revealing that individuals with high vitamin E intake did not develop the cancer. A family history of liver cancer or having liver disease in the past did not seem to have an effect on the individuals that consumed vitamin E.

There are many different forms of vitamin E; however, this study analyzed the effect of all types of vitamin E.

Thus far the evidence surrounding vitamin E’s effect on cancer is inconclusive and sometimes confusing for the average consumer to follow. For example, while some kinds of vitamin E have been shown to lower cancer risks, certain types have been shown to increase risks.

Although many studies have been conducted on the subject, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force currently believes that there is not enough evidence to recommend taking vitamin E supplement to prevent liver cancer.

“EMSL Analytical’s experienced food chemistry division offers a multitude of services, including vitamin analysis,” states Shannon Kauffman, Food Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor. “In addition to analyzing levels of the mandatory vitamins, A and C, required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for nutritional labeling, we test for numerous additional vitamins, including Vitamin E.”

EMSL Analytical’s nutritional analysis is compliant with the FDA’s laws, and RDI and DV percentages can be provided when applicable.
