EMSL Analytical offers testing for a wide variety of foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella

Government health officials have announced the outbreak of Salmonella poisoning as a result of contaminated dry dog food. The affected dog food was reportedly produced by Diamond Pet Food Processors at a single production plant in Gaston, S.C.

The contamination was discovered by Michigan health officials during a routine surveillance test. The outbreak has sickened 47 individuals in the United States and two in Canada.

Victims of the reported Salmonella poisoning may have become infected after handling the contaminated food or having contact with animals after they have consumed the food.

When infected with Salmonella, most people experience diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after their exposure. The infection typically lasts 4 to 7 days, and most individuals are able to recover without treatment.

However, there are instances where hospitalization is necessary. In severe cases, Salmonella may spread from the intestines to other parts of the body which may result in death if not treated properly with antibiotics.

“EMSL Analytical offers analysis for Salmonella and other foodborne illnesses in our cutting-edge food testing laboratories located across the country,” states EMSL’s National Food Microbiology Supervisor, Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., R.M. (N.R.M.), C.F.S.P.
