Colorado’s Waldo Canyon Fire is reportedly the most destructive in state history. According to the Burned Area Emergency Response assessment team, 3,375 acres were left severely damaged as a result of the wildfire.

The Associated Press reports that the blaze was so hot that nearly 20% of the soil in the area was burned to the point that no living plants were left on the surface and no root systems were left below the surface to a depth of an estimated four inches.

The physical damage was not the only problem caused by the Waldo Canyon Fire. Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association refers to the fire as the most expensive in Colorado history, estimating the total cost of damages to be more than $352.6 million. Over 4,300 claims have been made to insurance companies, and the loss of homes is the largest portion of total damages.

“EMSL Analytical is the nation’s leading provider of smoke damage testing services and offers fire debris analysis to help settle insurance claims for property damage caused by a wildfire,” states EMSL’s Materials Testing Laboratory Manager, Eugenia Mirica, Ph.D. “Through our expertise and advanced instruments, we provide complex testing services for identification of particles related to a combustion event.”
