Aspergillus is a type of fungus that is commonly found in the environment and in buildings that have suffered water damage or elevated humidity levels.  For people with weakened immune systems, breathing Aspergillus spores can lead to infections.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Aspergillosis is an infection caused by a fungus called Aspergillus. There are several different kinds of aspergillosis. One kind is allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (also called ABPA), a condition where the fungus causes allergic respiratory symptoms, such as wheezing and coughing, but does not actually invade and destroy tissue in the body. Another kind of aspergillosis is invasive aspergillosis, a disease that usually affects people with weakened immune systems. In this condition, the fungus invades and damages tissues in the body. Invasive aspergillosis most commonly affects the lungs, but Aspergillus can spread throughout the body and also cause infection in other organs.”

Studies have shown that invasive aspergillosis can occur during building renovation or construction.  This likely occurs when building materials contaminated with Aspergillus spores become airborne when materials are disturbed and moved.

EMSL Analytical, a leading indoor air quality (IAQ) and environmental testing laboratory, offers testing services to identify fungal pathogens to help protect vulnerable people. “Buildings, such as healthcare facilities, with people that may have weakened immune systems need to be especially vigilant of this fungal pathogen,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Environmental testing can help identify when microbial contaminants, such as Aspergillus, are in the indoor environment and at what levels.  EMSL provides fungal testing services through microscopy, culture methods, and utilizing PCR and DNA sequencing techniques,” he continued.
