Over 15% of the general population believe that the world will end in December of 2012

Las Vegas, NV - How widespread is fear about the world ending in December 2012? According to a Reuters Public Affairs poll, between 15-18% of the general population believe that the world will end on December 21, 2012 - a surprisingly large percentage. Looking at that statistic, it would appear that the prophecy has generated a shockingly large following.

Earth has over 9 billion years of history behind it - and, yet - approximately 1 in 7 people think it has an expiration date of 2012. In addition to those who believe the end is near, about one in 10 people say they feel overwhelming anxiety and fear about the approaching December date. The fear that life on earth is headed for an unavoidable end can drive some people to panic and obsession.

Before you end up with a panic attack, it may help to keep up with the latest on the ongoing debate. In one of the most in-depth explorations on the topic, Robert Sudden’s Prophecies for 2012 Debunked explores the many disaster theories surrounding 2012. In addition to compiling the many prophecies and predictions, Sudden claims his book, as its title suggests, convincingly “debunks” them one by one.

The book looks at the growing controversy that is the Prophecies for 2012 ’end of the world’ prediction, explores the theorists who are receiving the most attention in “believer” circles, analyzes official scientific publications, and compares similar historical events to determine what this time actually means to the world.

“Whatever the reason, one in seven thinks the end of the world is coming,” said Keren Gottfried, research manager at Ipsos Global Public Affairs which conducted the poll for Reuters.

While few people say they feel confident that the planet is safe heading into 2013, Sudden says that, based on the analysis, he does. While it may not quench the seemingly ongoing debate and fear, it’s good to know a book like this is out there.
