Australian Social Education Enterprise Teaches Young People Valuable Life Skills by Engaging in School Community Partnerships

VICTORIA, Australia July, 2012 – In 2004, the dream to build a primary school in Fiji and educate Australian youth outside the classroom was born, took flight and hasn’t stopped soaring since. This is the story of Clint Miller, Kate Richardson and the young people’s lives they are changing. www.destinationdreaming.com.au/

Clint Miller was living the dream – working as a lifeguard on the beautiful Sunshine Coast and travelling the world. One day his adventures took him to a remote Fijian community where he learned about family, culture, community, and the things that really matter in life. As an experienced youth worker and trainer, he knew this was an experience that every young person should have.

For Kate Richardson, education was in the blood. The daughter of a principal and a teacher, it wasn’t long before she left the fields of law and consulting and pursued her true destiny. Kate followed her passion for taking the unconventional path and, together with Clint, set about creating Destination Dreaming with a vision to connect and educate communities across the world. Kate wanted to provide young people with the opportunity to make a real difference and have experiences that developed resilience, self-awareness and empathy. Fast forward eight years and Kate and the team of passionate people at Destination Dreaming are now doing exactly that. www.destinationdreaming.com.au/

Kate Miller, who is the Program Director at Destination Dreaming says, “We are fuelled by a vision to connect local schools and communities across the world – to provide sustainable project support and life-changing learning experiences. The number of communities we support has soared and we work across the world … but our values and inspiration have remained the same.”

The story of a simple dream leading to great things resonates at the very heart of the not-for-profit organisation’s goals – to provide life education for children and empower them to be the best they can be. The Australian social enterprise works with schools to create sustainable community partnerships and teach young people about global citizenship, self-awareness and social justice. Destination Dreaming empowers young people to thrive in a global world by facilitating practical social education programs.

The programs are founded on cross-cultural learning and life education – the development of knowledge, life skills and values to charter life’s course and implement social change. Destination Dreaming’s various community-based programs are based on inquiry-based, experiential learning to integrate key concepts from a range of curriculum disciplines through interaction, observation and collaboration.
