New Novel Uncovers Thrills and Spills of Gay London

Debut novel by DJ Cooper has been described as ’possibly the funniest book ever written about life in gay London during the roaring-Noughties’.

LONDON, UK -- June 18, 2012 (OUTNOW) --  A new pastiche of queer London that sends up the city’s obsessions with sex, drugs and online dating is contained within the 384 pages of a stunning new novel called ’Pride Before A Fall’ by Mr DJ Cooper.

This impressive debut novel by one of the UK’s freshest writers has already caused quite a stir in his home country of England - and its author enjoys renown as a gay blogger, researcher, traveller, activist and marketing maven.

This Wednesday evening in London, DJ Cooper will be reading excerpts from the book at a special event to be held at Ku Bar in Soho.

This hilarious send-up of gay London draws on rumour and personal experience to chronicle and satirise obsessions to do with sex, drugs, online dating - and musical theatre.

Pride Before a Fall is Cooper’s first novel, and draws on fertile ground - London’s over-the-top gay clubbing scene, and a murky and secretive world of gay media.

Set against a backdrop of shadowy goings-on at the queer equivalent of News Corp, Pride Before A Fall is a modern satire about trade, in various forms. The book explores how far one might be prepared to go, and what would one do, to protect their own career, company, friendships, relationships, reputation - or even their very existence?

Stuck in a dead-end job, life is nothing more than a never-ending series of repetitive tasks for the book’s central character - Adam. Working at the mighty QueerDom media empire does have its upsides for Adam; he enjoys free entry to London’s glittering clubbing scene and an open invitation to the hedonistic queer capital of the world, no questions asked.

With its myriad blur of parties and endless celebrations, there’s never any shortage of places to see, and be seen, partying the night - and most of the following day - away too. But being a small fish, in a small pond, can only mean one thing in this city: that the sharks are never far away - and as Adam discovers, they are about to go on a feeding frenzy.

Lurching from one drug and drink-fuelled party to another isn’t exactly the most fertile ground for romance, but it certainly is for this outstanding debut novel. The book explores themes including that love can turn up at a moment’s notice, and in the most unexpected places. As Adam discovers, listening to your own heart isn’t easy at the best of times, especially when the soundtrack to his life is playing at an ear-splitting 50 decibels and a frenetic 120 beats per minute.

Adam discovers that sometimes your heart can sell you out, and what he thinks he has fallen for - hook, line and sinker - might be nothing more than imagination, and wishful thinking. Adam discovers he faces a stark choice in his life. Will he turn out to be a cynical old queen that never has a good word to say about anyone, or is he going to let it all roll on a feeling, a good feeling, a feeling that feels a lot like it could be, if he nurtures it - love.

This ’Ram-Dram’ romp through London’s queer underbelly is a rip-roaring, roller-coaster of a ride that pulls no punches, and isn’t taking any prisoners either.

This is a story about being done, being done over, whoring, pimping, drugs, addiction and death - oh, and of course there’s also a sprinkling of musical theatre too darlings.
