Tekla Structures Version 12 Supports Open Bim

26.6.2006, Tekla Corporation has launched the annual main version of the world’s leading product modeling software. Tekla Structures 12 is an even more effective tool for the entire structural design process, from conceptual design to fabrication, erection and construction.

Tekla Structures is a fully integrated building information modeling (BIM) solution that enables the implementation of an entire building project using a single model. The most significant innovation in this version is its open application programming interface (open API), which makes it possible to tie the different design applications and disciplines into a common 3D product model (BIM, Building Information Modeling). The open API is implemented using Microsoft .NET technology.

- As we want to promote the global adoption of open building information modeling (BIM), Tekla Structures 12 supports the open API. This facilitates the integration of different design applications, such as analysis and design software into the modeling environment. The open API also makes it possible to develop additional functionality into the Tekla Structures platform, reports Ragnar Wessman, Director of Tekla Structures product management at Tekla Building & Construction.

The integrated BIM process of Tekla Structures product also cater to an even more extensive user base; in addition to steel, precast concrete and wood structure engineers, the software offers increased project management support for contractors.

Other particularly significant new functionalities are automatic anchor bolt plans and creation and processing of multilevel assemblies. Anchor bolts are the one of the first drawings made in any project, so the new automation feature may save up to days on preparing plans. The modeling, processing, numbering, reporting and printing of multilevel assemblies not only saves time, but also reduces errors noticeably. There is a discernible trend towards pre-engineered buildings; therefore, these functionalities were deemed important.

- Tekla Structures 12 is a great version. Just one example is the arrival of multi-level assembly functionality which is very welcome addition to the software. It provides big and very valuable benefits for our fabrication planning. Simply put: it saves money, comments Lee Moore, Tekla Structures Coordinator at M&D Drafting Ltd, Canada (www.mddrafting.com)

Tekla Structures in brief
Tekla Structures is a fully integrated 3D solution that enables creation and management of complete 3D building models regardless of material or structural complexity. The Tekla Structures solution covers the whole structural design process from conceptual design to detailing, fabrication and erection.

The exceptionally seamless collaboration and information management applications in Tekla Structures are based on Tekla’s world leading building modeling solution sBIM (Structural Building Information Modeling). The same model can be utilized for producing analysis and design results, drawings and reports. Therefore, steel, concrete and structural design professionals can work with the same shared, always up-to-date model in every stage of a building project. Tekla Structures minimizes overlapping work phases and errors, which translates into shorter project lead times, significant cost savings and improvement in building quality – in other words, it increases the competitiveness of the entire structural engineering industry in the future.

BIM and Tekla Structures
Tekla Structures is the first modeling software to support open structural Building Information Modeling (BIM), based on collaboration of several parties using a common product model. Open BIM interfaces make different design applications and work phases work together, making it possible to produce and manage all design information within a single 3D product model. Tekla Structures has been developed to provide an open environment through standard (such as IFC) interfaces and Tekla Open API collaboration. The software communicates with other applications or can stand alone as a platform for customizable internal solutions. The comprehensive software application covers all materials and disciplines, enhancing an integrated workflow with all project parties.

Tekla Corporation in Brief
