A National campaign calling on the Australian Federal Government to remove the GST from domestic electricity, our MOST essential utility, to help lower soaring home power bills, was launched in late May 2012, with an online petition already gathering momentum.
Simon Supersmart has declared war on what he calls “The Great Australian Electricity Price Rip Off.”
"In 2012 domestic electricity is an essential service, yet unlike Water and Sewerage, it is subject to GST. In 2011-2012 The Federal Government will receive approximately $1.2 billion in GST from domestic electricity users.
With the increases foreshadowed, this will increase to approximately $1.4 billion in 2013" said Simon Supersmart.
“Electricity is the MOST essential utility of the 21st Century and it shouldn’t be taxed. Homes have already paid their income Tax and can’t claim the GST back, like businesses can, it’s not a penalty for these businesses,” said Simon.
Simon is calling on one million plus residential users to add their name to his “Say NO to GST” Petition by logging on to his website.

“Over the past five years power bills in Australia have escalated, on average, by more than 100%. From July 1, our electricity costs will be the highest in the world*; three times that of Canada and double the US. This is despite our power stations sitting at the door steps of some of the greatest coal reserves. It doesn’t make sense and it’s time to ask questions - starting with why a 10% GST is applied to such an essential service,” said Simon.
Simon Supersmart, the front face of the campaign, is the brain child of a Newcastle businessman from SuperSmart Power & Energy Saving Solutions, Bruce Hodgkinson.
Simon’s initial aim is to see ordinary everyday Australians fight this unfair tax on what is our MOST essential service and to see lower electricity prices for all.
