Helping a Family Recover from Tragedy Wins Glickman Design Build 2012 Chrysalis Regional Award for Universal Design

Glickman Design Build Wins 2012 Chrysalis Regional Award for Universal Design. Glickman helps a family tragically impacted by the father’s sudden death. Family life made easier by Glickman’s experience with complex designing & remodeling challenges.

A family is tragically impacted by the father’s sudden death. Glickman Design Build clients, a widowed mother and daughter, lived in a one level apartment to better cope with the daughter’s severe physical disabilities due to cerebral palsy. Her father had been her principal caregiver, lifting and carrying his daughter from her bed to other locations. Obviously, the father’s death prompted an abrupt change in circumstances
for the family.

The clients needed a functional space that facilitated as much independence for the daughter as possible. Transforming an 80’s sterile, bland master bath into a spacious, accessible retreat for clients that include a young adult with severe mobility issues was paramount.

The designer and construction crew incorporated undiscovered spaces to expand and further the utility of the space. Incorporating numerous assistive technology devices (disappearing pocket doors, ultra-lightweight wheelchair, electronic-activation faucets, anti-scald devices, barrier-free shower entrance, and full-height body dryer), this bathroom makes the most of every square inch.

Using luxurious materials judiciously, the homeowners can enjoy an accessible bath that improves their standard of living and quality of life. The bathroom is the opposite of institutional or sterile; it is warm, inviting and incredibly functional. With its variable lighting sequences, all on dimmers, it offers expansive shower space, improved storage closets, a compact jetted tub, and wide vanity countertop enable its users to experience signature amenities without expanding the room’s footprint.

Glickman Design Build Wins Chrysalis Remodeling Award Continuing to set new standards of professionalism, 81 remodeling companies from across the United States were named winners at the eighteenth annual Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence. The winning projects were selected from 420 entries. The entries were judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure.

“The Chrysalis Awards program, begun in 1994, recognizes the nation’s best work in sixteen general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. The Chrysalis Awards are open to any professional remodeler and design professional in the United States,” says Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards.

Pictures of the 2012 award-winning projects can be seen on Chrysalis website beginning in late June.
