Washington, D.C. -– NPR’s midday newsmagazine Day to Day will be awarded two 2006 Edward R. Murrow Awards for its coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism, The Radio-Television News Directors Association has selected Day to Day’s six-month Hurricane Katrina series entitled “Katrina Odyssey” for Best News Series, and one of the series segments, “Returning to the Ruins,” for Best Feature Reporting. Joshua Levs, frequent NPR contributor, reported the series with editor Michael Fields, Southern Bureau Chief, NPR.

The six month series, “Katrina Odyssey,” followed the Smiths, a New Orleans family of five, as they fled the storm to Atlanta, then Dallas, and ultimately to McKinney, Texas and the emotional and financial struggles that came with it.

Levs’ piece entitled “Returning to the Ruins” was cited for Best Feature Reporting and aired on October 13, 2005. The piece chronicles the Smith’s first visit back to New Orleans to assess what was left of their house and neighborhood. The audio for the entire series is available at www.NPR.org.

Hosted by Alex Chadwick and Madeleine Brand, Day to Day was designed to serve midday news audiences and bridge the information gap between NPR’s two award-winning newsmagazine shows, Morning Edition and All Things Considered. The newsmagazine debuted in 2003 and has become NPR’s fastest-growing new program. Day to Day, produced at NPR West studios in Los Angeles, currently has more than 1.6 million listeners on 180 public radio stations around the country.

Day to Day also has a strong presence at www.NPR.org. Listeners may access audio of each day’s show after 3:00 pm ET, audio of past shows, a selection of reports from Day to Day regular contributors, a list of the music from recent shows and 20 podcasts of selected Day to Day stories.

For information on local stations and broadcast times for Day to Day, visit www.NPR.org.

The Edward R. Murrow awards will be presented at the RTNDA Awards Dinner on October 16, 2006, in New York.
