The KinCare team stood out in full colour as the largest team entered in a record crowd at the Alzheimer’s Australia NSW Memory Walk and Jog on Sunday 6 May at Leichhardt Park.

A city sponsor and with over 80 KinCare and Stanhope staff registered, team KinCare had participants in each of the three activities: the 2 km walk, 7.5 km walk and 7.5 km run.

Guest of Honour, author Merideth Sindel, joined the KinCare team of office and field staff, families and carers, walking and jogging their way around the picturesque Bay Run as part of an estimated 1,400 strong crowd.

After caring for her mother at home for three years, Ms Sindel’s wrote Caring for Somebody with Dementia, a compassionate and realistic guide for family members and carers. “My hope is that I can help put a human face to the tragedy of the illness,” says Ms Sindel.

“We had KinCare, in-home nursing specialists for respite care,” explains Merideth in her recently published book Caring for Somebody with Dementia, “and it worked very well for us.”

Ms Sindel who described the day as “a totally inspiring experience” presented Alzheimer’s Australia NSW CEO the Hon. John Watkins with an autographed copy of her book.

“With over 280,000 Australians living with dementia and 1,600 new cases of dementia in Australia each week, it’s vital that people in the local community know what resources and services are available,” explained KinCare Chief Executive Officer, Jason Howie.

“There are still people in our communities who do not know that help can be provided to people with dementia and their families via home care services,” explained Mr Howie who competed in Sunday’s jog. “It was great to see people out in force to support this worthy cause and to share the news that services and resources are available.”

With a record attendance and $98,000 raised through on-line sponsorship and donations, Mr Howie rates the day as a huge success. “Our staff and their families all had a terrific time and it was great to see carers meeting each other to share their stories.”
