Beijing Air Quality Data Now Much More Visible To Travelers

Travelers and others can now see Beijing air quality easy-to-visualize charts.

Those people traveling to Beijing, China, now have easy to see graphical data on the last 24 hours of Beijing’s air pollution.  This data is derived from the PM 2.5 readings tweeted by the US Embassy in Beijing.  Beijing Travel Report, a website for those traveling to Beijing, has made this graphical information available as a service to its readers.

The website now provides a graph of the pollution levels for the last 24 hours.  The graph updates automatically every hour.  The data from the United States Embassy is for the PM 2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 micra).  This class of pollution is believed by the EPA to be very dangerous.  It can potentially pass from the lungs into the blood stream.

Kenny Edwards, Chief Editor at Beijing Travel Report, believes this public information needs to be put in a more accessible form. “Those persons thinking of going to Beijing on business or pleasure must be aware of the pollution levels.  The problem with tweets is that there is a lot of disjointed text to read through.  It is not very “graspable” in that form. If you have trouble breathing at home, whether because of asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis, you may have more trouble in Beijing.  When visiting Beijing, you are cut off from your normal support services that help you deal with any breathing problems.

”Mr. Edwards says that it is not his wish to discourage people from visiting Beijing.  On the contrary, he believes the city is full of historical marvels.  He just wants travelers to understand any potential risk and prepare correctly.

Air pollution can have detrimental effects on a person’s ability to process oxygen.  This is especially true for those with any lung or heart disease.  Those who are considering visiting Beijing are encouraged to take this graphical information to their doctor, and discuss the appropriate preparations for their trip.
