Fort Collins, Colorado - Representatives for Dr. Jon Anderson, a Fort Collins dentist, today announced the doctor completed the 26.2 mile Bataan Memorial Death March.  The event honors the thousands of World War II soldiers who died or were imprisoned on the Philippine Peninsula.  Dr. Anderson also specifically ran the marathon in honor of John Walker who passed away last year.

John Walker, a survivor of the Bataan Death March was a relative of Dr. John Siegmund and his wife Laurie.   Dr. Anderson wore a shirt with John Walker’s picture and his personal information during the run.  The dentist enjoyed the full support of his dental clinic as he had not run a marathon in more than thirty years and it was a great challenge for him both emotionally and physically.

During the marathon the doctor developed severe hip and ankle pain but he still finished in just over seven hours.  Dr. Anderson was perhaps the only dentist in Fort Collins to run the marathon this year which speaks volumes of the doctor’s determination and will to complete the marathon.

The Bataan Memorial Death March is not your usual marathon as it follows a course through the desert in New Mexico with more than three miles of soft sand, high heat, and wind.  The event was created to honor a special group of World War II heroes who were responsible for the defense of the islands of Luzon, Corregidor and the harbor defense forts of the Philippines.  The conditions which the soldiers encountered during the ordeal and the subsequent aftermath of the battle were unique.

They each fought side-by-side in a malaria-infested region of the country surviving on half or quarter rations with little or no medical help and they had to pursue their enemy with outdated equipment and virtually no air power.
