Tainted Medical Wipes Lawsuit Settled by Parents of Dead Toddler
EMSL Analytical provides a wide range of cGMP personal care product testing, including bacterial analysis
The parents of Harrison Kothari, a two-year old who died from a bacterial infection caused by contaminated medical wipes, have settled a lawsuit with the Wisconsin companies that made and distributed them. The wipes, manufactured by H&P Industries, Inc. and sold by the Triad Group, were recalled in February 2011 after they were found to be contaminated by the rare bacterium Bacillus cereus.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected the facilities between 2009 and 2011 and found that H&P failed to comply with the FDA’s cGMP regulations, which are intended to assure the safety, quality, and purity of manufactured drugs. The agency issued a recall for hundreds of millions of medical wipes and sent federal marshals to prevent their manufacture and distribution when the company refused to comply with their orders.
The company also produced alcohol wipes and lubricating jelly, which were found to be contaminated with the bacterium Elizabethkingia meningoseptica.
The company has faced numerous lawsuits, including those from other families whose young children were harmed by bacterial infections caused by the contaminated wipes.
“EMSL Analytical’s laboratory is an FDA registered and ISO 17025 compliant and provides a wide range of testing services for the personal care products, pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical device, and biotechnology industries,” states Diane Miskowski, MPH, Business Development Manager at EMSL. “In addition other service lines, we offer microbiological and sterility testing to avoid costly recalls and tragic contamination problems such as these.”
