UK women are being warned of to be aware of possible medical misdiagnosis after research has shown an 18% increase in deaths from womb cancer. The statistics, which were compiled by Cancer Research UK, have been labelled “hugely troubling” and have highlighted the importance of early detection. The symptoms of womb cancer can often be easily mistaken for other illnesses and Doctors need to be acutely aware of the possibility of misdiagnosis.

In the past ten years the mortality rate for womb cancer, or uterine cancer as it is also known, has risen from 3.1 to 3.7 deaths for every 100,000 women – an increase in death by 18%. Up until 1996 the diagnosis of womb cancer, or uterine cancer as it is also known, had remained at around 13.7 cases for every 100,000 UK women. The occurrence of the disease has now risen by 43% to 19.6.

Despite the increase in accurate diagnosis, experts believe further action needs to be taken to encourage earlier and more accurate detection. UK women are now being advised to better understand the disease in order to encourage an early diagnosis that will increase survival rates. This will also attempt to prevent cases of delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis where doctors fail to identify the disease before it is too late.

Commenting on the importance of correct diagnosis, Catherine Melia of Clear Law Medical Negligence Solicitors stated:

“This new research is hugely worrying and it’s critical that women are vigilant when it comes to their health.Understanding the symptoms of womb cancer will help women know what to look out for and when tests are necessary for an accurate diagnosis.”
Unfortunately, as medical negligence solicitors, we see a number of cases where the cancer was not detected or should have been found sooner. Early diagnosis can drastically improve survival chances and it’s vital that medical professionals are giving UK women the best chance of beating womb Cancer.”

“It is a Doctor’s responsibility to deliver a high standard of medical care and when negligence puts people’s lives at risk it is important to make a claim.”
