Last month, KXLY in Washington published a report about why people should have their homes tested for indoor air quality issues.  The article, “Have home inspected to make sure air doesn’t cause headaches” explains the fact that the air in many indoor spaces is more polluted than the outdoor air.

According to the article, “Poor indoor air quality can seriously impact health. Many chemicals, including formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are often found in homes and offices, can contaminate indoor air, leading to allergic reactions or chronic illness in certain individuals.”

The article specifically mentions formaldehyde which can be found in numerous building products and household furnishing.  In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12th Report on Carcinogens.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) also classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen.

“One way to help keep formaldehyde and VOC levels low in a home is to buy products that do not have these materials in them and do not off-gas these chemicals,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, a leading formaldehyde and IAQ testing laboratory.     “For most people who are already in a home filled with furnishing and products, air testing can provide them with information about what chemicals may be present and at what levels.  This information can be crucial in helping people determine if their IAQ is safe, and if not, they can begin taking the necessary steps to provide better air quality for their families or coworkers,” he continued.

EMSL has sponsored a video about the hazards associated with formaldehyde in indoor environments.  It can be seen at:
