The Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts in Sugar Loaf, N.Y., is undergoing a renaissance. Founder Richard Logothetis has stepped down as owner of the Lycian Centre and is bestowing the state-of-the-art theatre complex to the community, with oversight by a newly fortified board of trustees.

To that end, the Kings Theatre Co., a not-for-profit theater production company and primary operating entity at the Lycian, took ownership of the eight-acre Lycian Centre complex Feb. 24.  The aim of the Kings Theatre Board of Trustees is to build on the success of the Lycian Centre and advance its mission into a vital and thriving cultural center that nurtures great art and makes performance accessible to every part of the community.

“On behalf of Kings Theater Company, we are pleased to work closely with the business community and government representatives to enhance the performing arts in the Hudson Valley,” said Jim Sandler, president of the board of trustees. “We are striving to make the Lycian Centre the premiere location for performing arts, where artists can work, students can learn and technicians can develop their craft. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate a love and appreciation for the performing arts at every level of the community.”

Logothetis takes great pride in what he’s accomplished with the theater, but notes that he’s ready to turn stewardship over to a board that has a passion for the arts and a range of expertise. “This board of trustees has the enthusiasm and cross-section of talent to take the theater to the next level,” he said.

News of the transfer has met with strong support from community leaders and government officials.  Orange County Executive Edward Diana stated, “I firmly believe that the arts contribute to the vibrancy and vitality of a community. It is our good fortune to have an outstanding and regionally recognized venue like the Lycian Centre right here in Orange County. I look forward to working with the Kings Theatre Company and wish them much success as they bring new art and entertainment opportunities to Orange County.”

Chester Town Supervisor Steve Neuhaus also has been supportive, noting, “The Lycian Centre is a gem, not only for Chester but for the entire region. I am already working with the Kings Theatre Company as they strive to expand and improve upon the great venues that the Lycian is known for.”

The renewed Lycian Centre will premiere with the 2012-2013 season, projected to run from September to December 2012 and February to May 2013, followed by a summer season. The board plans to partner with artists and arts organizations in New York City and throughout the region to produce and present high-caliber works and introduce audiences to new art forms, including electronic and media arts.

Committed to inspiring and developing young performers through educational opportunities, the Lycian will continue to provide hands-on, real-world teachings of acting and movement techniques in a professionally designed theater through the Kings Youth Theater. The Lycian also will partner with SUNY Orange to offer a new technical-training workshop for students who are considering careers in the technical aspects of theater.

With this generous donation by the Logothetis family, the public becomes the benefactor of a rare and exceptional gift: a cultural showpiece in the heart of the Hudson Valley that converges the best of the arts in a first-rate performing arts center. With the support of the community and a vision to inspire generations of audiences, the board of trustees is committed to shaping the Lycian into a milieu for cultural experiences.
