March 12, 2012 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been asked to reconsider their decision concerning the risks of Yaz blood clots versus the benefits of Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella and similar birth control drugs.

Last December, a FDA advisory panel voted 15-11 to keep Yaz and other birth control drugs containing drospirenone on the US market. Drospirenone, a synthetic form of progestin, is the primary ingredient in the oral contraceptive, Yaz. Drospirenone may cause serious complications such as Yaz blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism and stroke.

Conflict of Interest?

According to the Washington Monthly and the British Medical Journal (BMJ), four of the FDA panel members that had voted in favor of Yaz, Ocella, Yasmin and other birth control drugs containing drospirenone may have a conflict of interest.

All four had a connection with Bayer, the manufacturer of both Yaz and Yasmin. This relationship was not considered a problem by the FDA.

However, another FDA panel member that was known to have voiced their concern about birth control drugs containing drospirenone was not allowed to vote due as it was considered a conflict of interest.

Watchdog groups such as the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) are asking the FDA to reopen the debate about Yaz blood clots risks and to remove the four panel members connected to Yaz manufacturer, Bayer.

They and other consumer advocate groups feel that a decision should be made concerning the risk of Yaz blood clots, DVT, and other serious side effects using a panel without any financial or business relationships with the manufacturers of the drugs being questioned.

Yaz Blood Clots

Last year, the BMJ published studies which indicated that the risk of Yaz DVT and Yaz blood clots was two to three times higher among women aged 15 – 44 taking oral contraceptives containing drospirenone such as Yaz than those women taking birth control pills containing the hormone, levonorgestrel.

Yaz blood clots can cause serious results, especially if the Yaz blood clots or DVT break loose and travels to the heart or lungs. If the Yaz blood clots reach the lungs, it has the potential to trigger a deadly pulmonary embolism.

Yaz Lawsuit

Yaz and Yasmin are big sellers for Bayer, adding up to over a billion dollars in sales. There is some concern that perhaps due to the financial benefit of these drugs, there may be an incentive to deny the Yaz blood clots and other Yaz side effects
