East York Mosquito Bulldogs - Baseball manager uses online maps and other online tools to keep her team organized.
The East York Baseball Minor Mosquito Bulldogs are a competitive AAA team of age nine boys, representing the East York Baseball Association (EYBA) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. We had the pleasure to talk with Dodie Mezo, the new team manager.
What is the Minor Mosquito Bulldogs story?
Our team was formed last year as a Senior Rookie team and under the guidance of East York Baseball Association and our volunteer coaches we played over 20 games, competed in 4 tournaments, and advanced to the quarter finals in our division at the Ontario Baseball Association finals. This was an amazing achievement for our first year team.
This year four new players have joined our team, making an outstanding roster that will take us far this season. Our team’s mission is to develop the baseball skills of our players while emphasizing sportsmanship, respect and fair play, through practices, games and tournaments. The boys not only play at the top level of competition but also build life skills and friendships from their team experience.
We are off to a great season and have started our weekly indoor spring training at a local sports complex where the boys are practicing drills and developing their skills. They are excited to be back together as a team and are having a lot of fun. We have a very dedicated coaching team, supportive parents and enthusiastic players and everyone is looking forward to getting back out to the ball park. Two highlights for this season will be hosting our very first tournament in June and our team’s participation in a tournament in Darien Lake, New York.
Why is TeamSnap great for your team?
As the new team manager of our baseball team I was so excited when I saw it, and I knew it would be a perfect fit for our team. TeamSnap’s baseball team website is our team’s “bulletin board” for communication, announcements and weather updates. We post the current field condition before practices and games so our home page is the only site parents need to check to know if a practice or game has been canceled or rescheduled. Another useful feature is the online refreshment schedule, as it is much more efficient then passing around a sign up sheet at the beginning of the season, and changes to the schedule are so much easier now. Our coaches really like the game availability feature so they can get a head start on putting together the game line-ups.
What is your favorite feature?
The best feature for our team is the link to maps and directions to our opponent’s ballparks. Once the game and location is entered on our calendar, parents can get directions right from their house to the field. This is very useful because we play games not only in the city but across the province, most often to ballparks we have never visited before.
I must also say that the TeamSnap support team is amazing. When I asked for help setting up some of the features to make the site work for our team, Traci responded within the day with great suggestions and advice. She provided the best customer service and support I have ever received.
Why do the Mosquito Bulldogs rock?
As every new team knows it takes a few practices, a few wins (and losses) and a few post game freezies together for the boys to start to feel like team mates. All of a sudden they start to try harder, run faster, and cheer for each other louder. One of our coaches started the tradition of the “team rock”. Before every game he would pick up a small stone from around the ballpark and keep it in his pocket until after the game when he would “award” it to the player who was the most outstanding player of the game. Maybe it was the player who made his very first hit to the outfield, or the player who made an amazing catch, or the player who surprised himself with an unbelievable double play. It recognized the player who tried really hard, showed determination and great team spirit. That player would then have the honor of being “Team Captain” for the next game, meeting the other team’s captain and shaking hands with the umpire.
We will carry on the “team rock” tradition this season, because on our team it’s not about being an all-star player, it’s about being an all-star team.
