British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has pledged to work with the UK insurance industry to reduce the number of whiplash claims.

Insurance insiders blame false whiplash claims for driving up the cost of car insurance premiums.

Speaking during talks held at Downing Street, the Prime Minister said he wanted to put a stop to so called “trivial claims”.

Number 10 also said that statistics showed Britain had become the “whiplash capital of Europe”, with over 1,500 claims being made every day for even the most minor of injuries.

However, some lawyers are concerned that the bad press surrounding whiplash claims will lead to genuine claimants missing out on much needed financial compensation.

Andrew Kwan, Head of Litigation at Manchester’s Clear Law Solicitors, commented: “There’s no denying that there is a problem with the current whiplash claims system, but making headline-grabbing statements about reducing bogus claims could have a damaging side-effect.

“What we absolutely don’t want to do is ostracise genuine victims who need financial compensation to help them pay for hospital bills, rehabilitation and repairs to their vehicle.

“Whiplash is a painful, debilitating injury, a fact that has been left out of the vast majority of articles relating to the subject. If we’re not careful, people will begin to view any claim for whiplash as disingenuous.”

“While the number of injuries has dropped over the last few years the government need to target accident prevention rather than the injuries that have occurred as a result. Drivers should be made more accountable for their actions via driving penalties, compulsory refresher driving courses and the introduction of slower speed limits.”

There has been a 70% rise in motor insurance injury claims in the past six years, despite a 23% drop in the number of casualties actually caused by road accidents.  Whiplash claims accounted for 70% of the total.
