FDA Petitioned to Review Genetically Engineered Salmon More Rigorously

EMSL Analytical provides cutting-edge GMO testing services

WEBWIRE

This week three consumer advocate groups petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to re-classify a new genetically engineered salmon so it can be scrutinized under a more rigorous review process before being sold.

If it is approved, the salmon would be the first genetically altered animal allowed for human consumption in the United States.

The new fish, created by AquaBounty Technologies’ AquAdvantage, is now classified as a new animal drug for the FDA review, but consumer groups say it should be treated as a food additive. Products classified as food additives are subject to a tougher FDA review than animal drugs, which activists believe is necessary for the genetically engineered fish.

“The food industry is encountering new challenges, and EMSL Analytical is constantly assessing and implementing new technologies and methods to serve our clients better,” states Charles Li, Ph.D., Director of PCR and DNA Analysis Laboratory at EMSL. “We offer advanced testing services for GMO, food adulteration, and quality control, and our results are legally defensible.”
