The Snugg Examines Possible Features in the New iPad 3 and What it Might Mean For Their Cases

The iPad 3 is likely to be hitting the shelves this year, but what features can we expect to find in the latest edition? The Snugg investigates.

Around February and March each year, the Apple rumour mill goes into overdrive as this is often the period where Apple prefers to announce new releases as it’s in-keeping with their product lifecycle.

This year is no different, after the release of the iPhone 4S, many were sceptical as they were unsure as to whether to expect an updated iPad 2, or a fully upgraded iPad 3.

Recent rumours and posts online indicate that the new iPad will indeed be a new model as opposed to an upgrade.  BGR claims to have a source that is in possession of a prototype iPad 3 and using the output debug tool iBoot, they state that:

“we can infer plenty of information about the upcoming iPad 3” BGR

Data output from the device points to two versions of the iPad 3, one with Wi-Fi only, and another that allows for GSM/CDMA/LTE connectivity. Screenshots of the output also point to the device running on an A6 processor, likely to be a high performing quad core model to beat other current tablet offerings.

The Snugg’s Managing Director, Mr Richard Mercer stated:

“The information acquired by BGR certainly seems credible, with the increase in tablet use and the increasing abundance of high spec applications; it makes sense to support them. With the debut of the new ultrabooks at this year’s CES, Apple needs to ensure that its heavy software users aren’t tempted away by their promise of superior performance in a compact form factor”.

Other rumours spawned initially by iLounge state that the iPad 3 was in fact at CES this year, but as Apple did not showcase officially at the event, it went relatively unnoticed. Their report talks of the iPad 3 being practically identical to existing model in terms of shape and size, save for being a millimetre thicker.

“Other news sources such as Bloomberg inform us that the new iPad will feature a HD screen and will also be compatible with long-term Evolution or LTE, a wireless network that gives access to users more quickly than ever before. Of course, as an iPad 2 case manufacturer looking to produce cases for the iPad 3, we’re interested primarily in dimensions and the position of sockets so that we can produce the next best-selling case. If the iPad 3 is indeed a millimetre thicker, then we’ll have to modify our existing designs to accommodate it. Where other retailers may get away with using their existing iPad 2 Case, our signature ‘snugg’ fit means that we’ll have to alter our designs” states Mr Mercer

Whether the new iPad will be enough to fight off the latest wave of competitors remains to be seen, but Apple has seen reasonable sales growth over the last quarter despite the release of Amazon’s ‘iPad killer’ the Kindle Fire so perhaps the iPad 3 will elongate their reign over the tablet industry. Whatever happens, the Snugg is sure to have an iPad 3 case ready.
