Debut author Marissa Meyer is receiving attention in Young Adult and Science Fiction circles alike following the recent release of Cinder, a futuristic retelling of Cinderella.

“The Young Adult genre contains countless versions of both familiar and obscure fairy tales,” noted Mindy Erickson, BooksOnBoard’s Merchandising and PR Specialist. “A fairy tale is an excellent base upon which each author can create something new and unexpected--and, in so doing, prove that even an ancient story can be fresh and exciting. Robin McKinley is especially well known among enthusiasts of retold fairy tales for titles such as Beauty, Deerskin, and Spindle’s End. Malinda Lo’s 2009 release, Ash, caused a more recent stir, as did Alex Flinn’s Beastly. What Marissa Meyer has contributed to the genre--a cyborg mechanic entangled in a struggle of intergalactic proportions--is something completely different.”

Cinder’s sequel, Scarlet, is expected in 2013.
