Black Box Social Media Goes Dark to Protest SOPA and PIPA

(January 18, 2012 - Austin, Texas) Black Box Social Media LLC, a social media marketing and consulting company and creator of the social media marketing training program ’Social Media In 7 Minutes’, has gone dark on their website today in order to join the throngs of other top Internet websites (like Google, Wikipedia, WordPress, and Social Media Today to name a few) to protest the potential passings of the SOPA and PIPA legislation pending in Congress.  Instead of it’s usual social media marketing blog, Black Box Social Media will redirect you to a page that will allow you to both protest Congress and black out your site as well.

While the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) sound good in the Orwellian word speak in which it’s proponents use to describe the bill, the reality is that this type of legislation will do more harm than good to the American public.

“We work with clients that have digital products that have been hacked or pirated and resold for profit,” says Black Box Social Media Co Founder Curt Maly.  “We fear this type of behavior with our own digital product, Social Media In 7 Minutes, as well.  But we do not feel that this legislation will actually prevent online piracy and, will instead, give the government more powers at the expense of individual freedoms.”  

Instead of protecting businesses, Mr. Maly feels the legislation will fail at stopping online piracy, will increase unneeded government regulation, will hurt job growth, and will censor the Internet.

“I’m not willing to sacrifice my freedoms for a false sense of protection and I hope other businesses and voters educate themselves on this topic and feel the same way,” states Mr. Maly.
