Men, Man Boobs and Muscle Dysmorphia
Men are just as self conscious about their appearance and body image as women. According to a study conducted by University of the West of England more than four in five men are unhappy about their bodies. They sight baldness, beer bellies and man boobs as problems that make them insecure and unhappy. In fact, so unhappy are men with their bodies, that 38% would sacrifice at least a year of their life in exchange for a perfect body.
The study contacted at the University of the West of England involved 394 British men, with a quarter of the respondents being gay men.
Some of the key findings:
• 23% said concerns about their appearance had deterred them from going to the gym.
• 63% thought their arms or chests were not muscular enough.
• 29% thought about their appearance at least five times a day.
• 18% were on a high-protein diet to increase muscle mass, and 16% on a diet
Treatment for man boobs or gynecomastia is becoming more common place. In particular, breast reduction surgery in the last few years has seen and large increase in demand. There are now gynecomastia pills such as Gynemax and Gynexin Alpha Formula that can help combat the symptoms and effects of gynecomastia.
On the other extreme are young men so obsessed with their body image that they spend most of their life in the gym, take steroids or, legal but questionable, muscle enhancing supplements such as Xtreme NO and HGH Energizer in order to look really big and muscular. This is a dangerous condition called muscle dysmorphia which drives some young men to bulk to a point that is life threatening.
Sometimes called “Manorexia”, muscle dysmorphia is so destructive that victims have a high risk of suicide. With the media influencing young men with images of perfect male bodies an unrealistic perception of what is normal is taking hold. A lot of the images we see in the media are not attainable unless men take steroids, work out everyday and eat a high protein diet.
