In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes lindane and other hexachlorocyclohexane isomers.  It was added to the Prop 65 list in 1989.

Lindane has traditionally had two main uses in the United States.  As a pesticide, registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an insecticide, it was used on fruit and vegetable crops.  According to the EPA, “Exposure to lindane may occur from eating contaminated food or by breathing air contaminated during formulation or use.  Lindane is quite toxic to humans.  The acute (short-term) effects of lindane through inhalation exposure in humans consist of irritation of the nose and throat and effects on the blood.  Chronic (long-term) exposure to lindane by inhalation in humans has been associated with effects on the liver, blood, and nervous, cardiovascular, and immune systems.”

The chemical, also regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a pharmaceutical treatment for lice and scabies, has been manufactured in 1% preparations as a topical lotion, cream or shampoo.

“The EPA has classified lindane as a Group B2/C, possible human carcinogen,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading environmental and industrial hygiene testing laboratory.  “Fortunately its use has been restricted in recent years due to human health concerns.  Due to its persistence in the environment and potential to bioaccumulate, testing to identify the presence of lindane can help prevent needless exposures,” he continued.
