Ammaria Johnson, a first-grade girl in Chesterfield County, VA, died on January 5 after suffering an allergic reaction during recess. According to MSNBC, she went into cardiac arrest before the paramedics arrived, and she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The cause of her reaction is unknown, but her mother said that she had a peanut allergy. Experts claim that her death could have been prevented by an EpiPen, a device that injects epinephrine and can reverse severe symptoms. Unfortunately, the school did not have any on hand.

In recent years, food allergies have become a contentious issue, and increasingly allergy sufferers and their families are filing lawsuits after life-threatening exposures.

“EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers testing services for a wide array of food allergens, including peanuts, soy, milk, egg, crustacean, and gliadin (gluten),” states Joy DellAringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP, National Food Microbiology Supervisor at EMSL. “Allergen testing can help prevent tragedies like Ammaria’s death, costly recalls, and damaging lawsuits. Our results are of the highest caliber and legally defensible.”
