Recruitment specialists Core Talent have seen a significant rise in vacancies for supply chain jobs and purchasing jobs during the last few months as a recent survey by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) suggests the procurement sector is once again in high demand.

The research conducted by CIPS showed the number of purchasing and supply chain job vacancies had risen by 33% in the second quarter of 2011, compared with the same period in 2010 as it appears recent scrutiny of government procurement strategies has led to more strategic employment in the sector.

Surprisingly there was also a marked increase in the number of public sector vacancies with an average of 29% in the first half of 2011.

Overall automotive manufacturing jobs showed the strongest growth, up to an average of 73% per quarter in the first half of the financial year.

Chris Harries, who specialises in purchasing and supply chain jobs at Core Talent Recruitment stated on the company’s blog, “I have to admit, we were initially a little caught off guard with the amount of new vacancies we are picking up at the moment”.

“Usually the run up to Christmas and New Year means that the recruiting activity generally tends to tail off as we progress through December... however it is undoubtedly good news that many companies still realise that their employees are an asset. The penalty for not having a buyer is missed opportunities on cost savings and a company without a materials planner will have more problems maintaining continuity of supply.

The research by CIPS also found that the majority of employees’ salaries had also increased within the procurement job sector with 60% of respondents to a Supply Management Profile suggesting it had gone up in the past two years.

The number of jobs with salaries between £75,000 and £100,000 had risen by 35% in the first half of 2011.
