“International Innovation in Diversity Awards” Recognizes Airline for Using Cultural Differences to the Benefit of Employees and the Business

FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines has been named among Profiles in Diversity Journal‘s 2006 “10 top companies for innovation in diversity.” The magazine’s “International Innovation in Diversity Awards” honor corporations, organizations and institutions around the world that have developed innovative solutions that offer measurable outcomes in the area of workforce diversity and inclusion.

American Airlines, a founding member of the global oneworld ® Alliance, is recognized for utilizing the diversity of its employees to drive innovation and creativity in a way that advances the airline’s business. American’s first Employee Resource Group (ERG) started in 1993 and has since expanded to 14 groups. In addition to the historic focus on cultural awareness and professional development, the groups now are equally involved in enhancing the competitiveness of the airline in an increasingly diverse marketplace.
“Our Employee Resource Groups are critical to our business,” said Debra Hunter Johnson, American’s Vice President—Global Human Resources Services. “Through their involvement in supporting our corporate objectives, American Airlines has maximized its service on new routes, garnered tremendous visibility in the communities we serve and realized significant cost savings. ERG members also provide input in areas of the business that are outside of their normal scope of responsibilities, which provides them with the chance to gain valuable leadership and analytical skills that position them well for future opportunities.”
