Care Home Claims Experts Warn Against Consumer Negativity

The warning comes following last month’s high profile BBC investigation into Steve Long, director of Universal Group.
 
Mr Long claimed to be able to protect personal assets against charges for care by setting up a trust, for which he charged £3,000.
 
Long’s business practices were called into question after he told an undercover BBC Inside Out reporter “I’m here to show you how to avoid care home fees…” and went on to claim that, providing the client had not already been assessed by the local authority, using a trust to avoid care fees was “straightforward”.
 
However solicitors and local authorities have denied this is the case. Speaking to the BBC, wills and administration of estates solicitor Caroline Bielanska said: “If you put your assets into a trust deliberately designed to avoid care fees then the local authority can treat you as though you still own the assets"
