California’s Prop 65 and Iprodione Public Health Concerns

In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65. 
 
Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes iprodione, a contact and/or locally systemic fungicide registered for use on a variety of crops.
 
Iprodione was first registered with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1979 as a fungicide.  It is used for a variety of field, fruit and vegetable crops.  These include almonds, grapes, peaches, potatoes, rice, berries, onions, peanuts, lettuce, golf course, lawns and ornamentals.
 
Handlers of iprodione may be exposed to the chemical during and after its use.  It comes in a liquid, wettable powder, dry flowable and granular formulations. Nearby residents may also come in contact with the fungicide during its use if it is not applied properly.  People may also come into contact with iprodione residues through their diet and drinking contaminated water.
 
“Due to health concerns, California placed iprodione on their Proposition 65 list of chemicals back in 1996 due to concerns over its ability to cause cancer,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading environmental and industrial hygiene testing laboratory.  “California’s agricultural workers, who are involved in growing fruits and vegetables that use this fungicide, or during its use on golf course and ornamentals, probably have the greatest risk of potential exposures.  Testing the air, soil and water can help minimize worker exposure and help identify situations where environmental contamination may also be a concern,” he continued.
