Friday 18th November 2011 – The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Mr Phil Hogan, TD, officially opened the new €2m Euromedic Ireland medical scan centre in Kilkenny today. The clinic will provide medical professionals in the South East with fast access to medical diagnostic scanning facilities in a primary care setting in the heart of Kilkenny City.

Five people are currently employed in Kilkenny including clinical and administration staff and over 100 people in Euromedic Ireland overall.  The opening of the centre is part of Euromedic Ireland’s wider expansion plan and brings the company’s total investment to €48 million in Ireland to date.

Commenting on the opening, Minister Hogan said: “I am delighted that Euromedic Ireland chose Kilkenny as the location for its first full clinic outside of the major centres of Dublin and Cork. The opening of the medical scan centre in Kilkenny is a firm demonstration of Euromedic’s commitment to its expansion plan, and I am pleased to say that it very much dovetails with the Government’s objective to improve accessibility to diagnostic services throughout the country, as an integral component of primary care.”

Colm Davitt, Chief Executive of Euromedic Ireland said: “Our decision to open a new diagnostic clinic in Kilkenny has already proven to be a wise decision. We have received a tremendous welcome from the people of Kilkenny and the region - from both GPs and consultants. Our bookings are considerably ahead of our initial projections proving that there is a huge demand for our services in the South East.  Our overall aim is to deliver diagnostics to communities throughout Ireland and to ensure that people throughout the country are within an hour’s access to an MRI scan by mid-2012.”

Dr. Sam Hamilton, Medical Director of Euromedic Ireland, said: “The focus of Euromedic Kilkenny is to provide efficient access to diagnostic imaging services to the GPs in this region. Too many patients have been waiting inordinately long periods for scans throughout the country. Euromedic Ireland can provide access to routine diagnostics in an out-patient setting in just 24 hours, thus relieving considerable stress, anxiety and frustration for patients and GPs.”

Dr Tadhg Crowley of the newly opened Ayrfield Medical Park, a new primary care facility in Granges Road, Kilkenny said:  “Euromedic’s opening in Kilkenny has been a huge benefit to the GPs in the South-East.  The opening of Euromedic Kilkenny means that we are now able to send our patients down the road where they can receive an MRI, X-ray or ultrasound scan on the same day.  It is a huge asset to GPs in the region in terms of the fast and efficient continuity of care of our patients.”

Euromedic Kilkenny joins Euromedic Ireland’s four other diagnostic centres in Dublin and Cork:  Euromedic Charlemont (Dublin City), Euromedic Dundrum (South Dublin), Euromedic Northwood (Santry, North Dublin) and Euromedic Cork (Cork City Centre).  The company also provides MRI services in Sligo General Hospital and the Ulster Independent Clinic in Belfast.

In June 2010, Euromedic Ireland centres became the first stand-alone diagnostic imaging centres worldwide to be awarded with the international Standard in Ambulatory Care from the Joint Commission International (JCI).  The standard means that Euromedic Ireland adheres to strict international policies and procedures in patient care throughout its clinics in Ireland.
