The J.M. Smucker Company announced on November 16, 2011 that it was voluntarily recalling a limited number of Smucker’s ® Natural Peanut Butter Chunky, because it may be tainted with Salmonella bacteria.

The product affected by the recall is packaged in 16 oz. jars with these specific characteristics:

-production codes of 1307004 and 1308004
-UPC (located below the bar code on the jar’s label) of 5150001701
-Best-If-Used-By dates of August 3, 2012 and August 4, 2012
-purchased between November 8 and 17, 2011

No other products from the company are suspected of being tainted by Salmonella, including creamy peanut butter. Moreover, no illnesses linked to the contamination have been reported.

The product was distributed in Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most people infected with Salmonella will experience diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after contracting the infection. Symptoms usually last for 4 to 7 days, and many people recover without treatment. However, small children, the elderly, and immocompromised individuals are more likely to develop a severe illness. In those cases, patients require hospitalization and treatment with antibiotics. The CDC estimates that approximately 400 people die of acute salmonellosis each year.
