US Tech Firm Claims Severe Software Copyright Violation by Singapore Based TechnoRiver Pte Ltd

Jolly Inc. claims that TechnoRiver Pte Ltd illegally copied large sections of their software application and remarketed it under their own name.

SAN CARLOS, Calif. – June 7, 2006 – Jolly Inc. (dba Jolly Technologies), developer of Print Studio 2E, a software application used worldwide by Fortune 500 companies, government organizations, and educational institutions to design and print secure photo ID cards and industrial barcode labels, is reporting today that Singapore based software firm, TechnoRiver Pte Ltd, has made an unauthorized use of copyrighted work belonging to Jolly Inc. and distributed a derivative under the name SmartCodeStudio.

“Jolly Technologies has invested years in the development of Print Studio. The company maintains records of customer surveys and feature requests, reseller feedback, market research, and other contracts that have resulted in the development of feature sets and user interfaces that are unique to Print Studio and provide a competitive advantage. Intellectual property theft is a growing problem in today’s global economy and we hope that by pursuing this matter to the full extent of the law, we can help to act as deterrence against similar crimes,” says Sandeep Jolly, President and founder of Jolly Technologies.

Lawyers for Jolly Inc. have demanded that TechnoRiver Pte Ltd and their distributors, many of whom are located in the United States, immediately cease all distribution of SmartCodeStudio or face legal consequences for violating Jolly Inc.’s intellectual property and business rights.

“As with any copyright violation, we are moving quickly to protect the companies’ rights. This would appear to be one of the most blatant attempts at copying that we have seen where a software company has simply taken another companies’ application, copied it dialog by dialog, and then remarketed it as their own product,” explains Ray Shahani, lawyer for Jolly Inc.

“In foreign countries, it is not unusual to see counterfeit versions of name brand products being sold locally. This case is unusual in that the original product has been re-branded and sold back to customers in the United States.”
