EMSL Analytical, Inc. Is Now Accepting Food Samples for STEC “Big 6” Testing

USDA to Enforce Regulation of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli “Big 6” in March 2012

WEBWIRE

Beginning March 6, 2012, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will test meat products for six additional types of E. coli bacteria to improve its safeguards for consumers. Currently, only 1 type of E. coli bacteria (O157:H7) is tested, but soon the USDA will require testing for 6 additional E. coli serogroups (O26, O103, O45, O111, O121, and O145). If raw beef tests positive for any of the 7 types of E. coli bacteria, it will be banned from the market under this new policy.

As an industry leader in food-science technology and analysis, EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers comprehensive testing for the STEC “Big 6” group for companies who want to try out their testing procedures before the rules go into effect.

“EMSL has an expertly trained unit of microbiologists and laboratory professionals working on STEC “Big 6” testing, using the most advanced methods in the industry,” states EMSL’s National Food Microbiology Supervisor, Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP. “We also hold various certifications from government agencies, so our clients know that they can rely on our results and comply with industry regulations.”

Any USDA-regulated meat, including beef trim, will be affected by these new food safety measures.
