Atlanta Legal Nurse Consultant Reports on "Crime And The Legal Nurse"

Atlanta, Georgia -- Atlanta legal nurse consultant Liz Buddenhagen, registered nurse (RN), organized a one hour talk by Melissa Becker, RN, Certified Forensic Nurse, and former death investigator of Resolve Med Legal in Minnesota on July 18, 2011.

Becker spoke to the Greater Augusta American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (GA AALNC) regarding points to consider when analyzing criminal cases.  Becker has a successful legal nurse business and works primarily on medical negligence cases as well as criminal cases.
 
About Analyzing the Cases:
Becker outlined the analysis process which includes:
·        the history of the crime
o   statements
o   depositions
o   affidavits
o   the scene
·        the medical information
o   medical reports
o   autopsy
o   diagnostic tests
o   independent medical exams
·        the circumstances
o   research
o   relationship
o   eyewitnesses
o   video or audio recordings
o   surveillance tapes.    
 
In investigation of the case, Becker stressed the importance of the details of interviews, statements, and medical records. Legal nurse consultants create timelines which pop out the details of the crime data, thus facilitating analysis.
Becker talked about the sexual assault and abuse cases before. She emphasized the importance of interviewing the victim and all witnesses, and evaluating medical and other history.

For case samples, the forensic nurse went over pictures related to sexual abuse, death investigation, child abuse, prescription forgery or alteration, homicide versus self defense, and ended with a gunshot wound autopsy report for review.
“Criminal cases are not for everyone” Becker said.
